The Global March for Peace and Nonviolence

The Global March for Peace and Nonviolence is an exciting initiative which will start in Wellington on United Nations International Day of Non-violence 2 October 2009 and will journey through 90 countries in all seven continents including Antarctica, involving hundreds of thousands of people before ending in Argentina on 2 January 2010.
Organisers of the march have chosen Aotearoa-New Zealand as the starting point in honour of our country’s history of peace leadership including: the nonviolence traditions of Moriori and Parihaka; being the first country to grant women the vote; being the only country to have a Minister for Disarmament; our inclusion of peace studies in the school curriculum; the establishment of Peace Cities throughout the country; our moves towards peaceful resolution of past injustices to Tangata Whenua and other ethnic communities, our prohibition of nuclear weapons; and our government’s support for the United Nations.
The Global March for Peace and Nonviolence has been endorsed internationally by three Heads of State - Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Croatian President Stjepan Mesic and East Timor President Jose Ramos Horta - as well as a number of Nobel Laureates including Desmond Tutu, the Dalai Lama and Jose Saramago; some sports stars including the Inter Milan football team; some artists including Yoko Ono, composer Philip Glass, author Eduardo Galeano and musical director Zubin Mehta; some actors including Viggo Mortensen; and a number of other political figures including Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Arun Gandhi, Vice-President of the European Parliament Luisa Morgantini, political analyst Noam Chomsky and former Director-General of UNESCO Federico Mayor Zargazo.
New Zealand endorsers include the Rt Hon Helen Clark, Bishop Paul Reeves, Moana Maniapoto (from Moana and the Tribe), Yulia (2005 New Zealand Music Awards Best Female Vocalist), Greenpeace NZ, Amnesty International NZ and the United Nations Association of NZ.
The March will officially start on Gandhi’s birthday (Oct 2) at Gandhi’s statue in Wellington and then visit a number of significant peace sites in Wellington before heading off around the world. Other interesting peace walks and exciting events are being planned around the country as part of the start of the march. Watch this space for announcements in the near future about these.

Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms
3 - 13 March 2009
John Leech Gallery - Cnr of Kitchener & Wellesley Streets, Auckland
VAANA: Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms: John Pule / Seraphine Pick / Dick Frizzell / John Reynolds / Julian Hooper / Emily Karaka / Charlotte Graham / Alexis Hunter
Visual Artists Against Nuclear Arms (VAANA) was formed in 1984 in response to the worldwide nuclear arms threat. The initiative was instigated by Margaret Lawlor-Bartlett, who, aided by Marte Szirmay and Nigel Brown extended an open invitation for artists to attend a meeting to discuss strategies and ideas to immobilise nuclear arms proliferation. One hundred Kiwi artists attended this first meeting, devising a plan to communicate their message through the medium of art in order to bring change and awareness about the hazards of nuclear arms. The artists elected to work towards an effective art project incorporating their particular vision, with the message of “peace” accessible to the public in everyday life.
While the panels were considered a significant tool in the establishment of New Zealand’s nuclear-arms-free policy, the “Peace Wall” remains incomplete, covering only 2/3rds of the space. Therefore VAANA, along with eight new artists, have created a further eight panels for Stage Three of the ongoing mural. John Pule, Seraphine Pick, Dick Frizzell, Charlotte Graham, Alexis Hunter, John Reynolds, Emily Karaka and Julian Hooper have created original works which will be displayed at an exhibition at John Leech Gallery from the 3rd - 13th of March, while the digitally reproduced images of the works will be enlarged to continue the display of artworks along the K Road site. This “Peace Wall” Stage Three will be unveiled and blessed at a ceremony including political leaders and all of Auckland’s peace enthusiasts at the K Road site on March 3rd.
VAANA has generously agreed that a portion of proceeds from the sale of the Stage Three artwork will go to benefit the work of The Peace Foundation.
