Helen Wihongi has two sons and four mokopuna and was born in Tolga Bay. She has a second level black belt in Aikido and is a registered psychologist. Her current employer is the Waitemata and Auckland District Health Board where she works as the research advisor Maori, giving effect to Te Tiriti in research practice. Helen has a vast range of experience in community psychology, research, ethics, health policy, funding and planning, tikanga Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi. She currently sits on several governance groups and committees including the Auckland District Health Boards clinical ethics committee and Maori research facilitation committee at the Auckland University of Technology.
